The Math Corps is an AmeriCorps program that provides one-to-one tutoring to 4th-8th grade students who are not proficient in math. Members are trained in prescribed mathematics interventions and conduct regular progress monitoring and assessments to ensure each student is on track toward proficiency in the necessary math skills. In addition, members participate in AmeriCorps programming including engaging volunteers and personal and professional development training.

During the 2010-11 school year, the Math Corps will be serving students in the following three geographic areas: Saint Cloud, Saint Paul, and East Central Minnesota (Chisago City, North Branch, Rush City, Hinckley, etc.)

Essential qualification to participate in Minnesota Math Corps:

Individuals must be 17 years of age or older (no upper age limit!), be a citizen, national or lawful permanent resident and have a High School Diploma or equivalent. We also require that applicants meet program eligibility criteria which include completing a math proficiency test and having a satisfactory response to a criminal background check. We prefer college coursework, higher education degree, or experience working with children and/or college coursework, higher education degree, or experience working with mathematics.

Top reasons that members like serving in Minnesota Math Corps:

  • Seeing students' faces light up when they finally "get it" and understand a math concept
  • Helping students become confident in their math abilities and themselves
  • Experience in an elementary school and/or junior high school setting
  • The chance to really make a difference in the life of a child
